Routers have been growing a lot smarter in recent years. Ironically, the gateway to the internet hasn’t always been the most intelligent equipment in the home, despite its obvious importance.
On the other hand, smart routers have grown increasingly popular in recent years due to devices from Eero, Google, and other companies. Its TP-Link Deco X90 is one of the most recent smart routers to hit the market, and it represents a significant advancement over previous models.
The Deco X90 is not only intelligent, but it is also beautiful. The X90 is also a mesh router, which means that you can set up many X90s across your home to provide blanket coverage. That’s great news for people who live in larger homes with areas where they don’t have access to the internet.

However, the Deco X90 is a pretty pricey piece of equipment. This device, which costs $449 for a pair of units, is more expensive than the Eero Pro 6, the Google Nest WiFi, and many other comparable devices. Is it a good investment of your money? Would it be better to take a chance on one of the other players? To find out, I’ve been experimenting with the TP-Link Deco X90 mesh router for quite some time.
Design
While many mesh routers are compact and elegant, the TP-Link Deco X90 takes a different approach. It is larger and more robust. Given that it’s around the same size as the original Amazon Echo — it’ll be a little more difficult to store in a closet or on a shelf than something like the Eero Pro 6, for example.
Despite the fact that it is larger than other routers, it is not unsightly equipment. A durable white plastic casing houses the TP-Link logo on the top, while a pair of Ethernet connections can be found on the rear.
The device’s power input may be located on the device’s bottom surface. Each Deco X90 is equipped with an ethernet input and an ethernet output, allowing you to connect devices through a wired connection.
However, with only one wired output, it is quite limiting — especially in a world where smart home hubs and bridges are becoming increasingly popular.
A few ethernet connections on the Deco X90 would have been nice, but I understand why they were not included. In addition, the router is equipped with an LED light, which changes color depending on the condition of the device.
Generally speaking, I enjoy the design of the Deco X90, but I also happen to have a space in my home where it would be a good match. If you’re searching for a router that will fit into a small place, the design of this router may not be to your liking. In a normal pack, you’ll receive two Deco X90 routers, which is all you’ll need to get started setting up your first mesh network.
Performance
The TP-Link Deco X90 is more than simply a visually appealing device. It is designed to provide high-speed internet access across your entire home. It’s a tri-band router, and the two nodes together should be able to handle up to 6,000 square feet of coverage, which should be plenty for most people.
Because the router is an AX6600 system, it is a tri-band router with one 2.4GHz stream and two 5GHz streams, which indicates that it supports WiFi 6. In each node, there are six internal antennas, and it supports various technologies like MU-MIMO, direct-to-client beamforming, and others. It’s a high-end router, to be sure.
In real-world situations, the router behaved very well. I didn’t need to put up two nodes in my two-story condo, but adding the second node upstairs did appear to improve the overall performance a little more.
We were able to acquire constant download speeds with little latency both in close proximity to the router and at a distance. In fact, the speeds were only around 1Mbps slower at a distance of roughly 30 feet from the router than they were immediately close to the router.
Conclusions
However, the TP-Link Deco X90 is not only a high-end router that competes with the finest in the business, but it is also a somewhat pricey one. The router runs admirably and is equipped with a slew of intelligent capabilities that are accessible through the simple-to-use Deco app.
It’s not ideal – a couple more ethernet connectors, as well as a USB port or two, would have been welcome additions. However, even in a world where there are a plethora of smart mesh routers, the Deco X90 remains a very powerful option.
