TP-Link TL-WR941HP Review

The TP-LINK TL-WR941HP is a basic wireless N router that is distinguished by its high-capacity wireless transmission. The TL-WR941HP is a basic wireless router with a simple interface. The design is quite eye-catching, featuring three long 9dBi antennas. It is equipped with four 10/100Mbps Ethernet interfaces.

All of the rest of the design is fairly straightforward, with a matte black finish and ventilation holes on both the top and bottom of the case. Make certain that you do not block them in order to avoid overheating.

Even though the firmware on the TL-WR941HP is still fairly conventional TP-LINK, it has been improved significantly. You have a nice home screen that displays all of the status information about your routers, such as the number of clients connected and the internet connection. More in-depth configurations are available in the advanced settings section. Some features, such as parental control, are considered to be value-added. That’s pretty much all there is to it when it comes to a basic router.

You can use the TP-LINK Tether app, which simplifies the process of configuring your router. I actually prefer to use the app rather than the web interface because it is more user friendly. The majority of the fundamental configurations can be completed entirely within the app. The app makes it very simple to see who is connected to you.

As an aside, this router is not compatible with the Unifi network. As a result, it should not be used to replace the router that TM provides.

Performance

The performance of this router is quite good, and I am particularly impressed by the wireless range that it offers. According to TP-LINK, this router is equipped with an independent amplifier for each of the antennas and can transmit at a maximum power of 1000mw per antenna.

There are a lot of cafes and restaurants where I can see this router being used. In addition to serving as an access point, the wireless can also serve as a wireless repeater, which TP-LINK refers to as a range extender (see below). Using my standard wireless configuration, I am able to achieve speeds of up to 90Mbps.

I believe I can do better, but the 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports on this router are restricting my ability to do so. It should be noted that this is still a single band Wireless N router, and as such should not be compared to a Wireless AC router.

Verdict

To summarise, the TL-WR941HP is a capable entry-level router with a reasonable price. With the tri 9dBi antennas in this configuration, it has an extremely long range. Assuming you have it in the proper location, I believe it is capable of providing wireless coverage for a large home.

In spite of this, it is still a single band wireless N router and will never be as fast as a wireless AC router, which is why it is rated as “excellent.” If wireless transfer speed is your primary concern, or if you have an Unifi internet connection, a Wireless AC router is the best choice for you. This is a fantastic Wireless N router in every way. It is incompatible with the Unifi protocol. As a result, if you want to have a better wireless experience with your internet connection, you should consider purchasing this router.
