In recent years, as a result of the widespread usage of laptop computers, wireless routers have become increasingly popular as a means of sharing an Internet connection across numerous PCs. A wireless router, on the other hand, may be used to connect a computer that does not have a wireless adapter to the Internet as well. Most wireless routers contain four Ethernet ports on the rear, which you may use to connect to the Internet through a connected connection instead of using the wireless connection. An additional fifth Ethernet connection is available for connecting the router to a cable or DSL modem, if necessary.
Step 1
Take the power cable out of the rear of the cable or DSL modem and set it aside. If the wireless router is linked to a power outlet, you must also unplug the power line from the router itself.
Step 2
Connect one end of the first Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the back of the cable or DSL modem, and the other end to the second Ethernet cable. To connect Ethernet cables, follow the same procedure as you would for phone cables: arrange the cable so that the tab protruding from one of the connectors faces the same direction as the cutout on one of the Ethernet ports, and then press in until you hear a click.
Step 3
Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the rear of the wireless router, to one of the ports labeled “Internet,” “Cable/DSL,” or “WAN,” as appropriate.
Step 4
Using the second Ethernet cable, connect one end to any of the remaining ports on the back of the wireless router and the other end to the computer. Typically, the ports are labeled with the numbers 1-4. The numbers are only there to assist you in remembering which port goes to which location; you are free to utilize whatever port you choose to travel to.
Step 5
The other end of the Ethernet wire should be connected to the back of the computer.
Step 6
Reconnect the power wires for the cable modem or DSL modem, as well as the power cords for the wireless router. You should be able to access the Internet on the connected computer within 30 seconds of connecting it.
